Debate Tournaments

Sitting in the hallway chatting with folks at this great tournament. I have a few ideas to jot down.

First, could we structure univeristy classes in this same manner? There's such energy, engagement and excitement over having intense conversations about Israel, the WTO and aliens.

A potential research question: Why does the University have the class structure it does? Is it purely material concerns, or is there a rhetoric justifying the MWF and TR schedule?

What about a course that assigned two or three students to work intensely on a question and engage in competitive arguments with others exploring the same question.

Could this be a way to replace the ineffective pedagogical styles of yesteryear, alive and well in our classrooms?

Could this be the way to get students interested in University education beyond an instrumentatlity useful for aquiring a job?

Could this be a way to get students to read more than espn.com?
